Local crafts on the Amalfi Coast
Craftsmanship on the Amalfi Coast is a real part of the territory.
But not everything you see is truly local.
Not all the same
There are still small shops and boutiques that work with traditional craftsmanship.
And then there are more tourist-oriented products, often made elsewhere and sold as local.
Understanding the difference completely changes what you bring home.
What you actually find on the Coast
Craftsmanship here takes different forms, some more authentic than others.
Among the most representative:
- hand-painted ceramics, strongly connected to local tradition
- handmade sandals, sometimes made to measure or even on the spot
- linen clothing, typical of the Amalfi Coast style — light and natural
- cashmere and high-quality fabrics, found in more curated shops
- products related to the territory, from souvenirs to more refined items, often based on lemon
It’s not just about the object, but how it is made.
What most people don’t consider
- not everything you see is produced here, even if it represents Italian craftsmanship
- the most touristy shops are often the most visible
- the most authentic places are recognized in the details, not in the shop windows
- a low price often means lower quality
- a high price doesn’t always guarantee quality
The simplest rule is this: trust your own eyes.
If you genuinely like it, then it’s worth it.
My point of view
My family has been working in handcrafted ceramics for more than 46 years.
I can recognize the difference between something truly made here and something designed just for tourism.
If you’re looking for something authentic, I can guide you to the right places —
based on what you’re looking for: more traditional, more refined, or more contemporary.
So you avoid the wrong purchases and bring home something that actually has value.
In the end, it’s simple:
if every piece is different, it’s handmade.
If everything looks the same, it probably isn’t.
